BIDV to raise funds for highway project
The Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam (BIDV) plans
to issue US$500 million worth of foreign denominated bonds over the next two
years to help fund a national highway project.
BIDV general director Tran Bac Ha said on Monday the 120km Sai
Gon-Trung Luong-My Nhon-Can Tho road project, which has already received
Government approval, will cost an estimated $1.8 billion, half of which will be
raised via investment partners. The bank plans to establish a joint stock
company to complete the road under a build-operate-transfer contract.
"The bond issuance is part of the capital mobilisation plan
for this very important project. It is expected to begin a new trend among
Vietnamese companies in attracting capital from abroad to contribute to the
development of the country’s bond market," said Ha.
BIDV has recently released VND3 trillion ($187.5 million) in
bonds, 48 per cent of which were bought by foreign investors. BIDV was the
first bank to issue bonds to non-resident foreigners. "The issuance
enhances BIDV’s financial capacity, competitiveness and investment portfolio,
and promotes the bank’s brand name in the international market,"
executives wrote in a press release. After the issuance, BIDV has VND7.2 trillion ($450 million) in
bonds in the market, making it Viet
Nam’s largest bond issuer.
